Dussehra festival, also reffered as Vijaya Dashami or Dasara, is an important Hindu festival in India – the land of festivals. This festival usually occurs between September and October, coinciding the Shukla Paksha or the bright half of Ashvin month. It commemorates the victory of goodness over darkness, represented by Lord Rama as he defeated the king of Demon Ravana.

Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of Ashvin month in Hindu calendar which usually falls in mid-September and October. Navratri is the first 9 days of the celebration that commemorates the defeat of evil over goodness.

Dussehra marks the day when Goddess Durga conquered Mahasihura and other demons like Nishumbh and Shumbh. However, the most popular epic is the Ramayana, portraying the legend of Lord Rama saving his beautiful wife Sita and defeating King Ravana – the demon king.

One of the most interesting features of Dussehra is the performance of Ram Lila. This play portrays the characters of Lord Rama and Ravana as he conquered the demon king. Hundreds, if not thousands, come to these plays to watch and enjoy the show.

Women also prepare special foods and goodies as the Dussehra approaches. Some even give these treats and sweets as their Dussehra gift.

Procession of Goddess Chamundeshwari in a decked elephant is also an interesting spectacle to watch. The procession takes places throughout the city.

Big fairs and plays are held during Dussehra. Stalls and different good items stores are installed near the areas where deities are worshipped. King Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarana effigies are prepared and burned down. Once burnt, it’s time for people to return to their homes.

During the Dussehra festival, everyone seems to be in a festive mood especially children. Wearing new clothes and enjoying the street festivities, everyone seems to be happy and festive. It’s indeed a fun festival in India – the festival of Dussehra!
